This week I spoke with Kathryn Porter, an energy economist who has received two death threats for saying things the government would rather people didn’t hear. She has a physics degree, she has worked inside the industry, and she is one of the very few people in Britain who has actually read the data rather than just repeated the official line.

Three things I learned:

1. Thousands of people are dying every year because they can’t afford to heat their homes. The ONS was publishing figures of 6,000 to 8,000 deaths annually from fuel poverty until around 2023, when they stopped. Kathryn thinks the real number is higher now.

2. Scotland’s electricity grid is heading for collapse and almost nobody is talking about it. The two power stations Scotland depends on are both approaching the end of their lives, replacements take seven to eight years to build, and the government’s plan for filling the gap has never been attempted anywhere in the world.

3. The “independent” report that the government uses to justify its Clean Power 2030 target was not independent. Freedom of Information requests confirmed that ministers signed off on the content before it was published. The man in charge has been telling Parliament it shows the target is achievable. Kathryn says that is not what it says.

3 things I learned:

1. The first thing a psychopath learns is how to look normal.
Loic says the number one capacity of a psychopath is to appear just like everyone else. The charm, the politeness, the submissiveness when you hold a door open for them. All of it is a mask. And the mask is the weapon.

2. You can’t be friends with a psychopath, you can only be useful to one.
Loic sees people as assets. “Properties”. He targeted depressed women without fathers. He once told a girl he was dying of cancer just to sleep with her. He knew exactly what he was doing, but just didn’t feel any guilt.

3. They don’t suffer the way you think they do.
Loic says loneliness is the price of greatness. But for a psychopath, it’s not even a price, because you can’t miss something you’ve never felt. “You can’t be sad about chocolate if you’ve never tasted it.” That line stayed with me.

Nigel Biggar is a professor of ethics and a priest who spent six years running a research project at Oxford examining the moral record of the British Empire - and was nearly destroyed for it.

When a Cambridge academic tweeted “we need to SHUT THIS DOWN” about his work, three mass petitions followed, his co-author resigned under pressure, and a major publisher cancelled his book two and a half months into copy-editing, citing “unfavourable public feelings.”

In this conversation, Biggar makes the case that Britain’s obsession with imperial guilt is historically unique, deliberately selective, and politically motivated - and that the people driving it are less interested in solving racial disadvantage than in building careers and movements around the crusade itself.

3 Things I Learned:

1. Empire was universal - the guilt is not. Every civilisation in history practised empire: the Comanche in 18th-century America, the Maori in New Zealand, the Fulani in Nigeria. Ancient Chinese and medieval Arab scholars did not write critiques of empire because it was so unremarkable as a form of political organisation. The obsessive focus on British imperial guilt, Biggar argues, is a recent and unique phenomenon - and one that is being deliberately manufactured rather than naturally felt.

2. Britain traded 3.2 million enslaved Africans. Arabs traded 9.5 million. Africans traded 12.5 million across the Indian Ocean. A book by a left-wing author called Unbroken Chains estimates at least 40 million Africans were enslaved and traded in total. Britain’s share was 3.258 million - nothing to be proud of, Biggar says, but a fraction of the whole picture. In 1850, in what is now northern Nigeria, the Fulani ran slave plantations employing 4 million people at one time - equivalent to the entire slave population of the United States. The African Union is now seeking reparations from Britain while this history goes unacknowledged.

3. The people pushing the anti-racist crusade may not actually want to solve the problem. When the government-commissioned Sewell Report on race and ethnic disparity was published in 2021 - with nine out of ten commissioners being non-white - the progressive response was instant dismissal with no serious engagement. Biggar’s conclusion: if you genuinely wanted to address racial disadvantage, you would engage carefully with the best available evidence. The knee-jerk rejection suggests the goal is not solving the problem but sustaining the crusade - because careers, social circles and movements have been built around it.

3 things I learned:

1. A skull found in China in the 1990s, when digitally reconstructed using CT scanning, suggests that large-brained humans were walking the Earth 1 million years ago. That pushes back our timeline so far that everything in recorded history amounts to just 0.2% of the human story.

2. A wooden structure was discovered dating to 476,000 years ago, over 100,000 years older than the oldest Homo sapiens fossil. Humans were cutting wood at right angles, joining pieces together and building structures nearly half a million years ago. This discovery has almost no mainstream coverage and a tiny Wikipedia page.

3. When the last ice age ended 12,000 years ago, sea levels rose by 120 metres. Since humans have always built their settlements on coastlines, the vast majority of prehistoric human sites are now underwater and almost certainly gone forever. The absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.

Three things I learned

1. Blair’s government was under direct instruction to support the McCanns - and it suited them perfectly.
Former British ambassador Craig Murray said Number Ten saw Madeleine’s disappearance as “a highly photogenic tragedy” that was useful for burying bad news. British diplomatic staff were told to support the McCanns beyond the usual level. The timing was no coincidence - Blair was weeks from leaving office and the financial situation was worsening. A missing blonde child kept the bad news off the front page.

2. Kate McCann refused to answer 46 questions put to her by the Portuguese police.
The dogs that detected death in the apartment and in the hire car the McCanns rented afterwards were not Portuguese - they were British. Despite this, the McCanns dismissed the Portuguese police as a “Third World” force and refused to cooperate. Detective Gonçalo Amaral, who led the investigation, was sued by the McCanns, had his book banned for six years, and was pursued through the European courts - before eventually winning £750,000 back from them.

3. The man who ran the McCanns’ media operation was a senior Labour Party communications chief.
Clarence Mitchell was head of communications for the Labour Party before becoming the McCanns’ spokesman. He has since defected to Reform UK. One man, at the centre of the Labour Party and the McCann campaign simultaneously, controlling the narrative for nearly two decades.
