1. Rishi Sunak privately didn’t think immigration was a problem. While publicly promising to do “whatever it takes,” behind closed doors he told Suella she was barking up the wrong tree. He was focused entirely on the boats and considered legal migration — which was running at over a million visas a year — essentially fine.

2. The civil service is not neutral. Suella describes it as a “remain liberal establishment bourgeois clique” — humanities graduates who have never worked outside the public sector, almost universally against Brexit, and ideologically committed to high immigration on economic grounds. When a minister tries to change direction, they don’t rebel openly — they just don’t move.

3. Greece actually solved the boats problem — and no one talks about it. When Suella visited as Home Secretary, Greece had cut illegal maritime arrivals by over 90% in four years. They built a militarised wall on the Turkish border, used their navy, and detained people quickly. It worked. Britain had the same powers and chose not to use them.

Amir Essalhi joined Scientology as a teenager after being inspired by Tom Cruise. He worked his way up to become a senior executive inside the organisation - and then got punished with unpaid manual labour for speaking to a former member on YouTube. He’s just left, and this is the first time he’s spoken publicly about what he saw from the inside.

3 things I learned:

1. Tom Cruise personally lobbied Tony Blair to get Scientology tax-exempt status in the UK. He would fly in and wine and dine senior politicians. It didn’t work — but he tried.

2. The punishment for breaking Scientology’s rules is physical labour. Amir spent a day carrying weights up and down a 1968 spiral staircase, unpaid, as punishment for watching a YouTube interview with a former member. Senior executives have been made to scrub floors.

2. International aid doesn’t reach the people it’s meant to help. Emily says 100% of it is performative. It’s about careers, optics, and ideology, not results. She’s been asking colleagues for 25 years to name one project that worked. Nobody can.

3. UNRWA, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, was turned into a tool to indoctrinate children. When Emily coded thousands of interviews with kids in Gaza, the most common word wasn’t “doctor” or “teacher.” It was “martyr.”

Here are 3 things I learned from Dom Joly:

1. Lebanon’s civil war was started by a demographic shift.
The Christians were in the majority when the country was founded, so they took power. Then the Shia had more children, the PLO arrived, alliances shifted, and it collapsed into 15 years of war. Dom watched it happen from his garden.

2. Dom Joly argues with strangers on Facebook while on holiday in paradise.
He was sitting in a 96% Sunni Muslim island off the coast of Kenya, in what he calls one of the most beautiful places on earth, and he was in a comment section fighting about Starbucks.

3. He ended the conversation less certain of his own views than when he started.
He came in as a self-described centrist who thought the Islamisation fears were overblown. By the end he was saying “have you given me information? Yes, a hundred percent” and “am I going to come out of this just agreeing with you?”
