Here are 3 things I learned from Dom Joly:
1. Lebanon’s civil war was started by a demographic shift.
The Christians were in the majority when the country was founded, so they took power. Then the Shia had more children, the PLO arrived, alliances shifted, and it collapsed into 15 years of war. Dom watched it happen from his garden.
2. Dom Joly argues with strangers on Facebook while on holiday in paradise.
He was sitting in a 96% Sunni Muslim island off the coast of Kenya, in what he calls one of the most beautiful places on earth, and he was in a comment section fighting about Starbucks.
3. He ended the conversation less certain of his own views than when he started.
He came in as a self-described centrist who thought the Islamisation fears were overblown. By the end he was saying “have you given me information? Yes, a hundred percent” and “am I going to come out of this just agreeing with you?”
