3 Things I Learned
Al-Qaeda said two completely different things in English vs. Arabic. In English, bin Laden’s message was “you attacked us first” - grievances about Israel, colonialism, the Kyoto Protocol. In Arabic, the message was the opposite: we must wage war on non-Muslims simply because they’re non-Muslims. Ibrahim found this in Library of Congress documents in 2004.
Islam didn’t spread mainly by the sword - it spread by making life unbearable. Christians and Jews in conquered lands were technically allowed to keep their religion, but had to pay a heavy tribute tax, were barred from jobs, and were treated as third-class citizens. Most converted simply because they ran out of money and couldn’t cope with the social exclusion.
The Muslim Brotherhood was caught with documents explicitly stating they are waging a “civilizational jihad” against America. The FBI busted them around 2009. The documents included the verbatim line: “We are going to sabotage their miserable house.” Their strategy: do it slowly and incrementally so people normalise each step.
